2010 Annapolis Ten Mile Run pre-race
commentary by Evan Thomas:
As Sunday's
7:45a.m. starting time approaches for the 35th
Annapolis Ten Mile Run, the weather people are forecasting a
most pleasant day for the almost 5,500 runners. Of
course, conditions may change, but if we see temperatures in
the low 60's at the start, many runners will be thanking
their lucky stars. We know most of them have been
training to account for the heat and humidity normally found
here in late August, but given the Mid-Atlantic summer, it is
not always easy to prepare for our signature running event of
the year. The AAMC medical staff is prepared to treat those
who might have difficulties with the course and terrain, but
lower temperatures will surely make their overall job easier.
This year
runners from 34 states, Canada, and Great Britain are
entered. Last year's Female Champion Kristin Blanck of
Annapolis, and Male Master's winner Maurice Pointer of
Baltimore are back to defend their titles. In addition,
last year's, 2nd, 3rd place and 5th
place male finishers, Justin Fritzius, Keith Matiskella and
Matt Fortin, are entered. Keep your eye on Karsten
Brown of Front Royal, VA, who is running his first A10 and
who ran just over 55 minutes at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler
this spring. For the women, 2nd place winner
Lauren Sanders of Wyomissing, PA, is back.
A large group
of Annapolis Striders has been running for the last 7 Sundays
from the City Dock doing parts of the course in some pretty
demanding conditions. Lead coach Tom DeKornfeld has
over 70 runners who are doing their first A10 or looking to
improve their time from previous attempts. Tom himself
has had a great running year so far, and it would not
surprise me to see him get a personal record on Sunday.
For the first
time, runners will be getting a race number that has the
computer scoring chip already attached to it. So, no
more need to tie the chip to your shoe and no need to return
chips after the race. I know some race committee
members were sorry to miss out on bonding at the chip
"stuffing party" that has been required in the
past. The system being used is from MYLAPS (the
successor company from the merger of Champion Chip and
AMD-IT).
Race
Directors Lisa Fontaine and Craig Harrison have some more
good news for the runners - a post-race celebration that will
go on until a little longer this year and features The Rovers
band along with copious amounts of recovery foods plus
watermelon and other refreshments. In addition to a
great premium, entrants will also get a pair of running socks
commemorating the 35th running of the race. On the
down side, due to some manufacturing issues, the race premium
will not be available at the race. All finishers will
have their premiums mailed to them. So, it behooves all
runners to ensure the address in the data base is the one
they want their premium sent to.
The Annapolis
Striders, under the leadership of Kerri Reilly, are taking
all possible measures to reduce the race's carbon footprint
while promoting, educating and encouraging club members, race
participants, volunteers and spectators to do the same.
The club's long term goal is to make the A10 - and all club
races - among the greenest races in the country. Over time,
the Striders intend to: reduce overall waste by 20%
each year until they achieve zero waste, minimize the carbon
footprint of all event-related transportation, become a
strong community leader and advocate for environmental
responsibility, and build awareness and support locally for
the steps the club is taking to become environmentally and
socially more responsible. The race website has more details
on this effort. If you want to volunteer to help this
process, or just to volunteer in general on race day, just
stop by the volunteer table either Saturday or Sunday at the
Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.
Runners are
expected to maintain a 12 minute per mile pace during the
race. This will enable the local roads to be returned
to normal conditions as soon as possible. To encourage
the maintenance of this pace, a select group of
"mature" runners, including your faithful scribe,
will depart the starting line immediately after the last
entrants have crossed it and try to run a 12 minute
pace. These colorfully attired volunteers will be able
to assist those needing help and direct those who are
proceeding more slowly to move on to the sidewalks when the
course is reopened by the police. Since only those who
complete the entire course will receive the premium, it is
imperative that runners cross all the timing checkpoints
along the way.
Spectators
are welcome to line the course. Residents along the route
are encouraged to provide cups of water, flags, banners,
balloons, orange slices, wet sponges, ice cubes, ladder
mounted hose showers, music of any kind and plenty of
APPLAUSE!!!
A portion of the
race proceeds will be donated to the Anne Arundel Medical
Center to benefit their "Care Like No Other"
Campaign, which will benefit areas of the hospital such as
the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit. The Annapolis Striders
extend their appreciation and thanks to the sponsors, over
750 volunteers, the community at large, and the 2010
Annapolis Ten Mile participants. Runners are reminded that
they can only pick up another participant's bib on Saturday
but not on Sunday. Be sure to bring your
government-issued picture ID.
Attention A-10
participants:
In an effort to make
the A-10 race as green as possible, we are encouraging
runners and spectators to consider sharing a ride to this
year's race. If you know others who are going and you can
carpool with them, that's great. If you want to offer a ride
to others, or wish to find a ride with someone, Go to this
website Sign up on the site (it is absolutely free) and
then search for the Annapolis Ten-Mile Run (A-10) group.
There you will find others who are either offering or seeking
rides to the race. It's that easy.
The Annapolis Ten-Mile Run Green
Initiative
The Annapolis
Ten-Mile Run principals, backed by the Annapolis Striders
(ASI), are committed to taking all possible measures to
reduce the race's carbon footprint on the planet while
promoting, educating and encouraging club members, race
participants, volunteers and spectators to do the same.
The Annapolis Striders' long-term goal is to make the
Annapolis Ten-Mile Run - and all its events throughout the
year -the greenest races in the country. We will achieve this
goal incrementally through proactive planning, education,
shared knowledge and experience as we take a year-by-year,
race-by-race approach to greening the runs.
Over time, the
Striders intend to:
1. Reduce overall
waste generated by 20% each year.
2. Minimize the carbon
footprint of all event-related transportation.
3. Become an even
stronger community leader and advocate for environmental
responsibility.
4. Build awareness and
support among Striders, race participants, sponsors, vendors,
spectators and the City of Annapolis for the steps ASI is
taking to become environmentally and socially responsible.
Plans for the 2010
Annapolis Ten-Mile Race include:
1. 100% electronic
application to reduce paper and ink consumption;
2. Recycling stations
at the expo and race;
3. Composting stations
for collection of watermelon, bananas and other biodegradable
items;
4. Shoe drop-off
stations for gently used sneakers (which will be donated to
those in need) and for old sneakers (which will be sent to
Nike for repurposing as tracks, playgrounds and other uses;
5. Alternative
transportation Information and rideshare websites to promote
carpooling;
6. Safety pin stations
for drop-off (pre-race), use (race) and return (post-race);
7. Vendor support to
increase the inventory of green products displayed at the
expo;
8. Awareness campaign
to equip runners with easy and effective ways to run greener;
and
9. Educational and
assessment efforts to learn what works, what doesn't and what
is possible for the future.
Future plans:
1. Seek ReSport
Certification.
2. Join Runners' World
Green Team.
3. Participate in
Active Network's Go Green Program.
4. Offer Green Awards
for age group winners
5. Offer Green
Premiums for race finishers
6. Set up a farmers'
market at the finish.
7. Increase use of
biodegradable products.
8. Use greener
Port-o-Potties.
9. Refine 2010 goals.
Attention Beginning
Running Class Participants:
If you made it
through most of the training and signed up for a t-shirt,
this is your last chance to claim one for yourself.
Just drop Evan Thomas
a note and we will
figure out how to get the t-shirt to you. Please
include your street address and phone number as we can
probably just drop it off at your abode.
Thanks. ET and Paul

Since many Annapolis
Striders use the Jonas Green Park on a regular basis we
encourage our members to take advantage of this volunteer
opportunity. We have also been informed that a bike rack will
soon be installed at Jonas Green Park.
On Saturday,
September 11th, A Day of Remembrance and Volunteering will
commence with a short ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the WWII Memorial
overlooking the Severn River. The Volunteer Center
of AACo, under Fay Mauro, who is coordinating the entire
day, will undertake a debris clean-up with students in
connection with a world-wide program under the auspices
of the Ocean Conservancy. The day will
conclude at noon.
Beginning at 9:00
a.m., Midshipmen and other volunteers will begin
4 projects at Jonas Green Park. The
projects undertaken by the adults will involve the
establishment of 3 rain gardens in the dirt islands in the
upper parking area. Two projects will entail re-grading
and re-seeding two areas along the lower parking lot to stem
storm water run-off. The fourth project, dependent
upon volunteer availability, will involve digging out and
mulching a 12 inch perimeter around the grassy area
adjacent to the pond. The purpose of this is to
begin a long term project to re-do this area with appropriate
native plants, bushes, flowers that provide better habitat
and color. The county is assisting in providing some equipment,
grass seed, mulch and straw. The county will also be
doing some of the work prior to 9-11.
They welcome
volunteers who like to dig in the dirt. All that's
required is a willingness to help, gloves, hats, sunscreen,
boots or sturdy shoes. Refreshments will be provided
through the Volunteer Center. Public restrooms are
available on site.
If you would like to
participate, please Contact Diane Evans
so they can provide
sufficient refreshments.
