2024 B&A Trail Marathon & Half-Marathon recap!
Thank you to all who participated in our 33rd annual B&A Trail Marathon & 29th annual B&A Trail Half-Marathon last weekend– especially to the many volunteers who helped make this year’s event such a success! 785 runners wound up crossing the finish line at Severna Park High School, with 286 marathon finishers and 499 half-marathoners. Runners enjoyed a bright, cloudless sky and cool conditions, albeit with a frustratingly shifty breeze. But it could’ve been worse, as anyone who braved our soggy Saturday packet pick-up can attest.
The seemingly ageless Michael Wardian of Arlington, Virginia earned his third B&A Trail Marathon win in 2:37:26, having first won this race twenty-three years ago! Last year’s women’s winner, Joy Lewis of Columbia, returned to successfully defend her title, finishing in an impressive 2:56:01.
Last year’s men’s marathon winner, Daniel Rowe of Baltimore, opted for the half this year and took the win in 1:12:38, while Laurel’s Samantha Merkel nabbed the women’s victory in 1:25:55.

New race director Tom Lyden put so much work into this year’s event and did an outstanding job. Thanks, Tom! And a big thank you to all the volunteers who supported him all weekend. We are an all-volunteer organization, and it’s your help that makes the Annapolis Striders such a great club.

Annapolis Striders Spring 5k Beginning Running Training
class registration is OPEN!
Class starts Tuesday, April 23, 2024, 6 PM
Bates Athletic Complex – Weems Whelan Field.
E.T./Evan Thomas Jesters
In memoriam for Coach Emeritus and 5k class founder, former Annapolis Striders President, marathoner Evan Thomas (a.k.a. E.T.), we will call ourselves “E.T.’s Jesters”. We will continue his mission and love of running with a healthier lifestyle. “Regular exercise has saved my life,” Evan wrote in his farewell Capital column in 2018. “Mostly, however, it has brought a joy I have tried to share with others.”. In 1993 he formed the first Annapolis Striders Beginning Runners Program class. He has coached thousands of participants in the sport of running. Evan was well known for his humorous antics and quirky behaviour during class and even wearing a jester’s hat to always follow Rule #1: “Have FUN!” during class. The program is a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) award winning beginning running class. We will have “E.T. made me do it!” on the back of our spring class shirts.
