A HUGE thank you to every Annapolis Strider who helped to make the A-10 a success! This race is not possible without the collective efforts of thousands of volunteer hours. We had excellent weather and many compliments from the runners. The 50th Annual Annapolis 10 Mile Run has been selected as the RRCA National 10 Mile Championship. The race is scheduled for August 24, 2025, and we hope you’ll join us to continue our tradition of success!

Help Wanted – Race Director –
Eternal Winter 6-Hour Run
I wanted all Annapolis Striders to be aware of an opportunity for a rewarding position within the Annapolis Striders organization. John Curley, who has served admirably as Race Director for the Eternal Winter 6-Hour Run, has elected to step down from that position. Hence, an opportunity now exists for the right person to attempt to fill John’s shoes.
The ideal candidate is an Annapolis Strider who has run this event, or its sister event, the Endless Summer 6-Hour run, and would now like to take the lead in continuing to make this event a truly great way to spend a Sunday in January. No prior race director experience is needed. I’m sure that John would be willing to give his successor a full briefing on what the job requires. Interested Striders should email Tom Lyden at toml@annapolisstriders.com, or call or text (240) 726-0207. Please act promptly, because I know that I will be deluged with applications.

Annapolis Striders Training/Education
Update from Bob Moseley,
VP of Training and Education
|

Moore’s Marines Marathon Training continues this week. Currently, we have 87 runners signed up for training. This week, we’ll follow-up our 20-miler with 12-14 miles. If you need some company for your long run, come join us on Saturday, 8/31 at 6:30 AM at Severna Park High; we meet at the back of the school.
For those interested in some organized speed work, Lee Crumbaugh hosts a weekly session on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm on Bates Track behind Maryland Hall. Anyone who is interested can show up, warmed up. The workouts are posted on Facebook on the Tuesday Night Track Workout (TNTW) page. If you have any questions, email Lee at leepublish@gmail.com.
Something to Think About: Last week, like many of you, I ran the Annapolis 10-Miler. Weather-wise, I don’t think that we could ask for much better August running weather! While I’ve been maintaining an ambitious marathon training regimen and am rapidly rounding into shape, I was mildly disappointed this year after finishing the race 4 minutes slower than I did last year. Certainly another year of life has impacted my speed to some degree, but 4 added minutes seems a bit extreme. What happened? A 10-pound weight gain. In my zeal to add some strength and muscle to my scrawny runner’s frame, I may have overdid it a bit. Anecdotally, I knew that added weight did not help one to run faster but I never really considered it until the race results came in. I did a Google search, looking for some answers, and came upon a very interesting site called Sports Tracks (https://sporttracks.mobi/labs/weight-loss-speed-impact) which provided some insight into the effect that extra weight can have on running. The site provides a calculator that you can plug your numbers in to see the effect that weight can have on your running. In my case, the calculator indicated that my 10 pound weight gain would translate into an additional 4m13s added to my last year’s time; in reality, it turned out to be only 4m but close enough. I still have time before this fall’s marathon to shed those extra pounds and come closer to my goal time.

Training opportunity:
Rosaryville Veterans Day Trail Run Training Series
The Rosaryville Veterans Day Trail Run race committee is hosting a series of training runs to help runners get ready for the November 9th races (50K & 20K). The training runs are open to all levels of runners, and they are a great way to get some training miles while getting a chance to preview the race course. You do not need to sign up for the race to join the training runs.
The first training run will be held at Rosaryville State Park on Saturday, September 7th at 8:30am. The park opens at 8am, we are planning to have shoes hit the trail at 8:30am. Please plan accordingly. There is a $3.00 park entrance fee, which is paid upon entering Rosaryville State Park. There is no additional cost to participate in the training run.
The plan is to break into two groups. The first group will do the entire 9.5-mile loop. The second group will run approximately 6.5 miles (start at the parking lot then run to road crossing near the Mt. Airy Mansion and use a mix of dirt and paved roads to return to the parking lot where we started). Both groups will run approximately 12-14mpm pace depending on weather conditions and general pace of the group. There is not any water/nutrition out on the training so please make sure to bring water and nutrition you will need depending on which group you join. After the run we will have some cold water to hand out and hang out for a bit.
The perimeter trail is approximately 9.5 miles long and buffed out (not technical trail) with very little elevation change (flat).
The future training runs dates are as follows:
- September 7th
- September 21st
- October 12th
- October 26th
The future training run distances will likely change so we progressively increase distance in preparation for the race.
All runners are responsible for their own safety. This is not an official Annapolis Striders event.
If you are unfamiliar with Rosaryville State Park, please look at the MAP.
Please follow us on social media for any race updates such as training run updates.
