With a little over two- and one-half months to go until race time, we still have volunteer positions available for those seeking to be part of this great event. For example, volunteers are needed to staff Aid Station 6, which is at mile 19 on the marathon course just south of Aquahart Road. We have sufficient staffing for the other 5 Aid Stations so if you were thinking of volunteering for one of them, I ask that you volunteer for Aid Station 6 instead.

Thank you.

ANNAPOLIS STRIDERS RUNNER EDUCATION AND

TRAINING

Keep an eye on this section for announcements about training programs!

Annapolis Striders Training/Education

Update from Bob Moseley,

VP of Training and Education

B&A Trail Half Marathon Training: Training began the week of 12/30, with 1st  group/long run on 1/4/25. 73 runners are now registered. If you are interested in joining us, check HERE.A full training plan is available for those interested and I will send that out starting this week to all who have signed up. The plan is particularly focused on those who have not run a ½ marathon but an enhanced version will also be available for those who have completed a ½ but may want to step up their game a bit.

Winter Warriors 5K Training: 37 folks have signed up for the Winter Warriors (started on Sunday, November 24, 2024) 5k Beginning Runners Program, which is a ten week run/walk program starting with a week one, 1 minute run, 2 minute walk over 20 minutes, three times a week with a gradual increase of running time of about 1 minute a week until week ten with a 20 minutes continuous run. Pre-run dynamic warm up exercises and walk with a post-run cool-down walk, static stretches are included. The graduation race goal is the Valentine’s 5K (held on Saturday, February 8, 2025). Race fees are separate and NOT included in membership fees, and participation in those races is not required to join the training program.. A race preview run is available to participants the weekend before the race. Check the Striders website for more details.

Something to Think About: While about a month of the winter is now in the rear view mirror (and most of the snow is gone!), we still have a couple months to go before the prospect of snow and ice interference is gone. In the meantime, Amby Burfoot offers some tips on how to help maintain your fitness and maintain speed during the cold weather. Check him out at his Run Long, Run Healthy Weekly newsletter for more tips: https://www.runlongrunhealthy.com

Optimize Your TrainingTime: The Perfect 30-Minute Workout

It’s winter in the Northern Hemisphere and not the best season for fast, timed workouts. Still, you don’t want to lose all that summer-fall fitness. You’ve got to include something in your training, right?

Here’s a workout that comes with the claim that “a surprising number of studies have compared this specific routine to other common threshold workouts, and this one frequently produces the highest percent gains.”

The context here is cycling, but the session is just as effective on the run. It doesn’t matter your pace. You just go moderately hard for 5 minutes, take a 60-second break, and then repeat until you have logged five 5-minute repeats.

You can do it indoors on a treadmill or outdoors on cold and even blustery roads. Again, pace doesn’t matter. It’s all about the effort.

The workout also fits neatly into a short 30-minute time period. Got more time? Add 10 to 15 minutes to your warmup and cooldown.

The author says, “Done right, the first interval will feel a little too easy. The last one will be a struggle.” I’d rather avoid the struggle part in winter running. Strive for “hard but controlled.”

Also, it’s fine to start with fewer than 5 of those 5-minute intervals. And you could take 2-minute recoveries if you feel the need. More at Fast Talk Labs.

See you on the road!
