Become a Director!

The Annapolis Striders has two positions open immediately to join the Board of Directors. Responsibilities include attending monthly evening meetings on the first Tuesday of each month, representing the membership of the organization, and being actively involved in the club by attending as many events as possible as a participant or volunteer. This link provides additional background on the Role of a Director.

The Board of Directors is filled by all volunteers. If you have not had the chance to be on the Board, this is a great opportunity. The Board is also preparing the slate of officers for the next election in early 2025. If you would like to be considered for a current or future position, please contact Jim Falvey or Casey Rayburg.

Although I know we are more than four months away from race day, I don’t think it’s too early to start asking my fellow Annapolis Striders to consider volunteering for the 2025 event. Several people have already signed up, and I thank them for their support. I have a particular need, however, for three, four would be better, Annapolis Striders to volunteer to work on the truck crew. This is a two-day volunteer opportunity. It involves moving items from the West Street shed to Severna Park Hight School on the Saturday before the race, delivering supplies to the Aid Stations on the day of the race, and then picking up all the supplies and returning them to the West Street shed. Ask anyone who has done it before, they will tell you it’s a lot of work.

So, who do I want to volunteer for this prestigious truck crew assignment? Certainly not the guys (including you, Robin) who worked on the truck last year. They paid their dues, and I want each one of them to run the marathon or the half this year. No, my ideal candidate is an Annapolis Strider who has run either the marathon or the half one or more times in the past and enjoyed the benefit of the effort the past volunteers have made to the success of the races. The Annapolis Striders is a volunteer organization based, at least in part, on the concept of mutuality: I volunteer so you can run races, you volunteer so I can run races. It’s that simple. So, if you have run this event several times, maybe this is your chance to volunteer so other Annapolis Striders can take a shot at the B&A course.

ANNAPOLIS STRIDERS RUNNER EDUCATION AND

TRAINING

Annapolis Striders membership is required to participate in these training programs. There is no fee for the training programs but you must register.

Keep an eye on this section for announcements about training programs!

Annapolis Striders Training/Education

Update from Bob Moseley,

VP of Training and Education

Coaching Opportunities: The B&A Trail ½ Marathon program will get started right after the New Year, with registration opening on December 6. I am looking for coaches/mentors to help with that group as well. If you are interested in either opportunity, send me an email at vp_training@annapolisstriders.org.

B&A Trail Half Marathon Training: Registration for the training program is now open; check the Striders website for sign-up details. The actual training will begin on 1/4/25 at 0730; we’ll meet at Jones Station. A full training plan will be available for those interested and I will send that out starting this week to all who have signed up. The plan is particularly focused on those who have not run a ½ marathon but an enhanced version will also be available for those who have completed a ½ but may want to step up their game a bit.

Winter Warriors 5K Training: Winter Warriors (started on Sunday, November 24, 2024) 5k Beginning Runners Program is a ten week run/walk program starting with a week one, 1 minute run, 2 minute walk over 20 minutes, three times a week with a gradual increase of running time of about 1 minute a week until week ten with a 20 minutes continuous run. Pre-run dynamic warm up exercises and walk with a post-run cool-down walk, static stretches are included. The graduation race goal is the Valentine’s 5K (held on Saturday, February 8, 2025). Race fees are separate and NOT included in membership fees, and participation in those races is not required to join the training program.. A race preview run is available to participants the weekend before the race. Check the Striders website for more details.

Something to Think About: One of the basics of improving your running relates to the number of miles that one runs each week. Theoretically, more miles usually helps improve performance as long as injuries can be held at bay. Once the injuries show up (as the inevitably will for hard core runners), it’s time to evaluate your program to determine what happened and what may have contributed to the injury. While higher mileage can be a positive, it can also be a primary reason for the ensuing injuries. If this is (or has been) you, you may want to consider trading some of your running miles for cross training. Cycling, rowing, elliptical, rucking, etc. can help provide you with the requisite aerobic (or anaerobic) training that can augment your running at less of a physical cost than running the extra miles. Here’s an article from Marathon Handbook that provides some additional insights on the subject and may just help you adjust your program in a positive way: https://marathonhandbook.com/7-downsides-of-only-running.

See you on the road!
