With a little over two- and one-half months to go until race time, we still have volunteer positions available for those seeking to be part of this great event. For example, volunteers are needed to staff Aid Station 6, which is at mile 19 on the marathon course just south of Aquahart Road. We have sufficient staffing for the other 5 Aid Stations so if you were thinking of volunteering for one of them, I ask that you volunteer for Aid Station 6 instead.

Thank you.

ANNAPOLIS STRIDERS RUNNER EDUCATION AND

TRAINING

Annapolis Striders membership is required to participate in these training programs. There is no fee for the training programs but you must register.

Keep an eye on this section for announcements about training programs!

Annapolis Striders Training/Education

Update from Bob Moseley,

VP of Training and Education

B&A Trail Half Marathon Training: Training began the week of 12/30, with 1st  group/long run on 1/4/25. 69 runners registered to date. If you are interested in joining us, check HERE. A full training plan is available for those interested and I will send that out starting this week to all who have signed up. The plan is particularly focused on those who have not run a ½ marathon but an enhanced version will also be available for those who have completed a ½ but may want to step up their game a bit.

Winter Warriors 5K Training: 37 folks have signed up for the Winter Warriors (started on Sunday, November 24, 2024) 5k Beginning Runners Program, which is a ten week run/walk program starting with a week one, 1 minute run, 2 minute walk over 20 minutes, three times a week with a gradual increase of running time of about 1 minute a week until week ten with a 20 minutes continuous run. Pre-run dynamic warm up exercises and walk with a post-run cool-down walk, static stretches are included. The graduation race goal is the Valentine’s 5K (held on Saturday, February 8, 2025). Race fees are separate and NOT included in membership fees, and participation in those races is not required to join the training program.. A race preview run is available to participants the weekend before the race. Check the Striders website for more details.

Something to Think About: From the 6 Minute Mile blog, a little something about one way to boost your marathon performance: adding more mileage. Now, I know that many runners are rather set in their ways and the more experienced among us have our preferred training approaches; some like low mileage, some like high mileage, some like a hybrid program, etc. This article discusses the advantages of adding easy miles to your program, opining that the added mileage can help improve your marathon times. While some may be inclined to stick with a program that has worked for them in the past, it’s always worth it to explore new ideas, evaluate them and decide if a change may help you improve. Of course, some of us are just happy to be on the road (especially considering the negative impact of the recent snow has had on running conditions!) but take a look at this article and see what you think. Here’s the article, complete with links:

The “easy” way to boost marathon performance

Every complicated problem has an easy answer – and it’s usually wrong. We’ve always believed that axiom, but a massive new running study has changed our minds. In fact, there is an “easy button” to improve your marathon times and the way to hit that is by adding easy miles to your training regimen: “Want A Faster Marathon Time? Just Add More Easy Miles, Says New Mega Study.” The study cited by MarathonHandbook looked at the training volume of 119,452 runners in the final 16 weeks before a marathon. Not surprisingly, the more miles a runner trained, the faster they got to the finish line. But the most interesting takeaway was that when a strong runner added more miles, they added only easy miles, not 10K pace training runs or speedwork on the track. In other words, their ratio of easy miles to hard miles was much higher than 5-hour marathoners. Part of the answer to why this works is that it is much safer to gradually increase Zone 1 runs than it is to add fast-paced workouts. Renowned running coach Greg McMillan confirms this theory in a recent story he authored: “The greatest improvement in your performance over the course of your running career comes from improvements in your basic fitness. Runners can certainly improve their speed and sprinting ability, but this can only improve a relatively small amount… Over a few years, you can markedly improve your endurance and stamina, thus providing a larger base and pushing your total performance much, much higher.” The full details of Greg’s analysis are worth checking out here. One other interesting fact from the big training study is that less experienced marathoners typically come up well short of the recommended minimum weekly mileage of most training plans. If an intermediate runner is supposed to be doing 35-40 miles per week, the study showed they are typically running fewer than 25 miles.

See you on the road!
