Women’s Distance Festival & Run After the Women 5k
Thank you to all the runners and especially the volunteers who all made this race a success. I’ve enjoyed directing this race for the past 9 years; however, it’s time for me to move on. We are actively looking for an individual to take this race over. Please contact me or any of the Board members if you are interested.

Update from Bob Moseley,
VP of Training and Education

Moore’s Marines Marathon Training continues this week. Currently, we have 77 runners signed up for training. This week, we move up to 14-miles. If you need some company for your long run, come join us on Saturday, 7/20 at 6:30 AM at Severna Park High; we meet at the back of the school.
A-10 training also continues, with 71 runners. Contact Dave Dold (daviddold@me.com) if you’d like to join.
For those interested in some organized speed work, Lee Crumbaugh hosts a weekly session on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm on Bates Track behind Maryland Hall. Anyone who is interested can show up, warmed up. The workouts are posted on Facebook on the Tuesday Night Track Workout (TNTW) page. If you have any questions, email Lee at leepublish@gmail.com.
For marathon runners, one staple of the standard training program is the weekly long run. Starting from a modest 10 miler on week 1, the distance builds weekly until the legendary 20 miler is on the schedule. The 20 miler has been a staple of marathon training since the emergence of the first big running boom in the late 1970s and was cemented in programs by the elite runners of the day, folks like Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, Craig Virgin, Don Kardong, to name a few nd its popularity has never waned. While the 20 miler continues to be a standard in many training programs (including the Striders’), does the 20 miler actually provide a significant training benefit or does it detract from one’s marathon training? There are both proponents and detractors, with each having valid points. The proponents would say that the 20 miler is absolutely essential, that it not only builds physical endurance but mental endurance as well; it helps build one’s confidence to complete the race. But consider this: the advent of the 20 miler began when those elite 70s runners made it a standard part of their training plan. However, they typically ran the 20 miles at a 6:00 pace and finished the run in about 2 hours. For the masses, however, running a 20 miler in training is a different story. Considering that it is typically recommended that long runs be run at 1 – 1:30 minutes slower than marathon race pace, that means that someone with a projected finish time of 4:30 will be running their 20 miler at 11:30 to 12:00 minutes per mile or a total time of 3hours 50minutes to 4hours. Not only is that a long time to be out on a training run, it also makes it very difficult to fully recover to be ready for the next week’s training. What do the detractors have to say? Coach Dr. Jack Daniels says that runners should never exceed 25-30 percent of their weekly mileage in a long run and proposes a 2:30 – 3:00 time limit for long runs. Dr. Dave Martin recommends that long runs should be limited to between 90 minutes and 2 hours and Dr. Dave Costill noted that a 2 hour run reduces muscle glycogen by as much as 50 percent and while this may be acceptable on race day, it can take as many as 72 hours to bounce back. So, what does all of this mean? Do we need to scrap the 20-miler in favor of something shorter? Should we continue to plow through 3+ hours of running in pursuit of some questionable training advantage? I suggest probing your fellow runners for their thoughts; there is a wide perspective on what works and you may find that looking at things from a different angle may lead to some unexpected success.
