John Wall Memorial One Mile Track Run (7/13)

Results & photos are posted!

A fun time was had by all at the 43rd John Wall Mile back on July 13th, as about 150 runners took part in the event on a cool & comfortable morning at Severna Park High School. 19-year-old Eric Johnson was the fastest male finisher in a speedy 4:46, while Kaitlyn Govatos was this year’s women’s champ in 5:31. Runners ranged in age from 82 (John Koletty) down to 6 (multiple kids), with many youngsters from our Annapolis Striders Junior Striders program participating.

Full results courtesy of Nut Hall/Maryland Timing have been posted, and photographer extraordinaire Jon Valentine took a lot of terrific photos at the event. (As usual, these photos are free for personal, non-commercial use.) This year’s race directing trio of Tom LydenKarsten Brown, and Lee Crumbaugh would like to express their thanks to Nut, Jon, and our great volunteers this year, as well as to SPHS for letting us relocate the event to their excellent facility.

And as the Wall Mile was the fourth race in our 2024 Championship Series, Dan Mandeville has the Champ Series standings updated through this event (and will no doubt have them updated again quickly following this weekend’s Dog Days 8K!).

Annapolis Striders Training/Education

Update from Bob Moseley,

VP of Training and Education

Moore’s Marines Marathon Training continues this week. Currently, we have 80 runners signed up for training. This week, we’ll be running a 16-miler. If you need some company for your long run, come join us on Saturday, 8/3 at 6:30 AM at Severna Park High; we meet at the back of the school.

A-10 training also continues, with 77 runners. Contact Dave Dold (daviddold@me.com) if you’d like to join.

For those interested in some organized speed work, Lee Crumbaugh hosts a weekly session on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm on Bates Track behind Maryland Hall. Anyone who is interested can show up, warmed up. The workouts are posted on Facebook on the Tuesday Night Track Workout (TNTW) page. If you have any questions, email Lee at leepublish@gmail.com.

There are a number of different opinions regarding what constitutes that heart rate where maximum aerobic benefits occur with minimum anaerobic stimulation. One approach to determining this heart rate comes courtesy of Dr. Phil Maffetone. He recommends that the most effective way to determine one’s maximum aerobic heart rate is to use the formula 180 – age. He contends that running at this heart rate provides the optimum benefits designed to increase one’s aerobic fitness and that running at this heart rate should constitute the bulk of one’s running. Running at this heart rate should help you finish aerobic workouts feeling refreshed and energized. Running in this manner, however, may be slightly foreign to many of us, as we have been conditioned/trained to run at higher heart rates than Maffetone’s method prescribes. There are some adjustment factors that he provides that could change the 180- age formula slightly. For example, you would subtract 10 from your baseline if recovering from illness or injury, subtract 5 if you had a recent injury, inconsistent training or recently returned to training or add 5 if you’ve been successfully training for 2 years or more. You’ll find that using this approach to training will initially result in you running somewhat slower than you may be used to, as it is challenging to keep the heart rate at such a low level. If you’d like to learn more about this and how to incorporate it into your training, here’s a link: https://philmaffetone.com/180-formula. Take a look at his “MAF Test” and give it a try on one of your easy run days.

Moore’s Marines Marathon Training

If you’d like to participate in the program, please see

For more information and registration to sign up. There is some additional information on the website that provides some details into the program and once sign up begins, I will send out more details on the actual training plan. Of note, there will also be a Facebook page for the training group that will open on or about June 3 and once you’ve formally signed up, you will get access to that page. We’ll use FB to send announcements, ask questions (and answer them), and provide some training tips for aspiring and experienced marathoners. Looking forward to getting ready for the fall! Bob Moseley.

Training opportunity:

Rosaryville Veterans Day Trail Run Training Series

The Rosaryville Veterans Day Trail Run race committee is hosting a series of training runs to help runners get ready for the November 9th races (50K & 20K). The training runs are open to all levels of runners, and they are a great way to get some training miles while getting a chance to preview the race course.  You do not need to sign up for the race to join the training runs.

The first training run will be held at Rosaryville State Park on Saturday, September 7th at 8:30am. The park opens at 8am, we are planning to have shoes hit the trail at 8:30am. Please plan accordingly. There is a $3.00 park entrance fee, which is paid upon entering Rosaryville State Park. There is no additional cost to participate in the training run.

The plan is to break into two groups. The first group will do the entire 9.5-mile loop. The second group will run approximately 6.5 miles (start at the parking lot then run to road crossing near the Mt. Airy Mansion and use a mix of dirt and paved roads to return to the parking lot where we started). Both groups will run approximately 12-14mpm pace depending on weather conditions and general pace of the group. There is not any water/nutrition out on the training so please make sure to bring water and nutrition you will need depending on which group you join. After the run we will have some cold water to hand out and hang out for a bit.

The perimeter trail is approximately 9.5 miles long and buffed out (not technical trail) with very little elevation change (flat).

The future training runs dates are as follows:

  • September 7th
  • September 21st
  • October 12th
  • October 26th

The future training run distances will likely change so we progressively increase distance in preparation for the race.

All runners are responsible for their own safety. This is not an official Annapolis Striders event.

If you are unfamiliar with Rosaryville State Park, please look at the MAP.

Please follow us on social media for any race updates such as training run updates.
